Charismata Ministries is a ministry initiated by the Holy Spirit, which got its start in the first half of the 1980s. (The word ‘charisma’ means a ‘spiritual gift’ in Greek, –‘charismata’ in the plural – as they are spoken about in the New Testament, for example 1. Cor. 12:4. Thus you could also call Charismata Ministries ‘the ministry of the gifts of the Holy Spirit’. There is certainly a hint to the Charismatic movement as well.)

Right from the start it was obvious that this ministry would have two main directions, which in principle summarize the activities of Charismata Ministries: a Christian distribution center and a ministry to the Body of Christ. The Christian distribution center is in the first place a tool to spread the gospel message, whether it be through the written word, music, means of mass communication or anything else like that. But it is also closely connected to the second main direction of the ministry, which is the ministry for the whole church of Christ: helping it to fulfill the plan of God among various nations and supplying it with the means needed to do the work, whether in the area of Bible teaching in the form of books, magazines and the like, or in the material, technical, financial or other area. This shows that the range and growth of Charismata Ministries are practically unlimited.

The main emphasis of the ministry has, from it’s birth on, been on the written word. More than fifty books and publications have been translated and published over the course of about twenty years. At first, when Estonia was still under Soviet occupation, most of the work had to be done by hand – the duplication of the books was done on mechanical typewriters through carbon paper, but even then they were very often done in hundreds of copies. Some of the books by Charismata Ministries have been published and printed in Sweden and Norway, between 1988 and 1991. The number of authors who have been translated is rather large. The books by Kenneth E. Hagin have been published in the Estonian language the most, both in titles and the number of copies printed, but also such writers as Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, John Osteen, Jerry Savelle, Casey Treat, Mac Hammond, T. L. Osborn, Norvel Hayes, John Beckett, Malcolm Smith, etc. Some books by new authors, like Lynne Hammond, Patsy Cameneti and Ruth Ward Heflin, are currently in the process of being translated and published.

Journalism has also been a focus of Charismata Ministries. The first publication was a collection of articles, mainly translated from the English, called just ‘Charismata’, which was published in the fall of 1986 and duplicated on typewriters. In free Estonia it was followed by a magazine called ‘Usumaailm’ (‘The World of Faith’), which had three issues published in the years 1995 and 1996. Although the publication of it came to a halt, mainly caused by the lack of finances, it does not mean that ‘Usumaailm’ has come to an end. We hope to revive it in a new and more powerful way. When a music ministry grew out of Charismata Ministries, it was named Taeva Muusika (Heaven’s Music). Two issues of a magazine with the same name were published in the year 1997. This project is also waiting to be revived.

Almost from the very start the distribution, promotion, and production of Christian music has held a prominent place among the doings of Charismata Ministries. Already in 1984 the ministry released a tape by Lydia, ‘Olen vaba’ (‘I have been set free’), which was the first ever Christian music tape in Estonia, done in a professional way – the covers or inlay cards were printed in Finland and the tapes were secretly manufactured in a tape factory owned by the state. In cooperation with several well-known Christian musicians, like Scott Wesley Brown from the States, for example, we managed to secretly release and distribute to many different parts of the Soviet empire (as it was then) tapes with the best Christian music of that period. What should also be mentioned was the cooperation of such record labels as Sparrow and Star Song. In the free Estonia we have continued to distribute and promote Christian music, be it on the pages of various publications, through radio work or via a special magazine called ‘Taeva Muusika’ (‘Heaven’s Music’), of which so far two issues have been published. Although the main emphasis right now is on the promotion and distribution of non-Estonian Christian music, it may shift in the near future to the production and promotion of Christian music of Estonia.
